Caldas da Rainha

Offering a mix of tradition & a modern city vibe...

Caldas da Rainha is one of the most popular Silver Coast villages, widely famous for its traditions linked to ceramics and well-being.

The town was founded by Portuguese queen D. Leonor after ordering the construction of Portugal's first thermal hospital. Caldas da Rainha (which in Portuguese means "waters of the queen") grew around the hospital, with Queen D. Leonor still very much present in the town's history and culture.

During the 19th century, the abundance of clay around the town allowed several ceramics factories to prosper, transforming Caldas da Rainha to become one of the main ceramic production centres in Portugal. Amongst the most famous ceramic artists of the time, Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro and his creations are still a trademark of what today is known as "louça das Caldas" (Caldas pottery). Ceramics inspired by humour, caricature and eroticism are also a symbol of Caldas da Rainha, with emphasis on the popular figure of Zé Povinho and the Caldas phalluses.

Today, Caldas da Rainha thrives on this mix of much-loved traditions from the past and vibrant energy that pulses through various aspects of community life. From the colours of its Praça da Fruta to the energy of its shops, restaurants and many events and cultural activities. Not to mention its fabulous beaches and surrounding rural villages!
